Finding Local Resources Anywhere
A Guide to Building Your Own Safety Net
Not in one of our main outreach zones? That's okay. Mutual aid exists everywhere, but it's often hidden or hard to find if you don't know the right keywords. This guide will teach you how to find food, medical, legal, and community support in your specific area using safe search tactics.
Quick Navigation
Magic Keywords
When searching on Google, DuckDuckGo, or social media, combine your City/County Name with these terms:
| Category | Search Terms |
|---|---|
| Direct Aid | "Mutual Aid [City]", "Community Fridge", "Free Store", "Distro", "Food Not Bombs" |
| Housing | "Tenants Union", "Housing Justice", "Eviction Defense", "Squatters Rights [State]" |
| Healthcare | "Free Clinic", "Harm Reduction", "Needle Exchange", "Street Medics", "Trans Health" |
| LGBTQ+ | "Pride Center", "Trans Support Group", "Queer Exchange", "LGBTQ Center" |
| Legal | "Legal Aid", "Pro Bono Lawyers", "Bail Fund", "Jail Support" |
Where to Look
Often, the most active groups aren't on the first page of Google. Check these platforms:
- Instagram: Many mutual aid groups use Instagram as their primary hub. Search for tags like #CityMutualAid.
- Facebook: Look for "Buy Nothing" groups, "Queer Exchange" groups, or local "Mutual Aid" groups.
- Signal/Telegram: If you make contact with a local organizer, ask if there are secure chat channels for updates.
- Physical Spaces: Check bulletin boards at local libraries, independent bookstores, coffee shops, or community centers.
Vetting Organizations
Safety First: Not every group labeled "aid" is safe or helpful. Be cautious.
Green Flags:
- "Solidarity, not charity" language.
- Transparent about where funds go.
- Responsive to community feedback.
- Focus on meeting needs without judgment or prerequisites.
Red Flags:
- Requires intrusive personal data for basic help (SSN, detailed history) unless legally necessary for a specific grant.
- Religious proselytizing as a condition of aid.
- Cooperation with law enforcement.
